Mallya: Monza should suit our car
Force India team principal Vijay Mallya believes the Monza circuit will suit the Silverstone-based outfit’s 2014 car.
The classic track features several long straights broken up by tight chicanes. With the VJM07 being fitted with the Mercedes power-unit, Mallya is confident that the team will be competitive at this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix.
“The Italian Grand Prix is always a great event and this circuit is legendary,” he said. “It is also one that should suit our car, with long straights and an emphasis on power.
“Both Checo and Nico have had good results here in the past and will hopefully do the same this year.”
Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg finished eighth and 10th in the last race at the Spa-Francorchamps circuit in Belgium.
Despite both drivers scoring points, the team slipped to sixth in the constructors’ championship behind rivals McLaren.
However, Mallya is optimistic that the team can reclaim fifth before the end of the season. “We’re now sixth in the standings and coming away from Spa with five points was a good exercise in damage limitation,” he said.
“It means we are only two points away from fifth place with all to play for in the coming races. With the double points in Abu Dhabi, too, the battle is likely to remain open for us until the final race.”
