Mallya salutes Perez’s mature drive
Force India team owner Vijay Mallya has applauded Sergio Perez’s drive at the Austrian Grand Prix.
Perez, who started just 15th after a five-place grid penalty, incurred for his last-lap clash with Felipe Massa in Canada, produced a fine performance to finish sixth at the chequered flag, after running an alternative strategy that saw him go deep into the race on his opening stint, and even momentarily leading.
The Mexican’s display prompted praised from team owner Mallya, who singled out the maturity of Perez’s drive.
“Checo’s race was particularly noteworthy when you consider that he started from P16,” said Mallya. “It was a very mature drive and he did a fantastic job of looking after the tyres and making an alternative strategy work.
“His pace was excellent, he set the fastest lap of the race, and he didn’t put a wheel wrong.
“The opening lap was the key to making the strategy work because he overtook five cars,” Mallya concluded.
