Starting sixth, Ricciardo spent the opening phase of the race tucked up behind the two Williams cars, but an early stop saw him past Felipe Massa.

Having cleared his team-mate Sebastian Vettel at the final round of stops, Ricciardo went on to pass both Sergio Perez’s Force India and the ailing Mercedes of Nico Rosberg in the final laps of the grand prix to secure his first win in Formula One.

The likeable Australian becomes the 105th different winner in the history of the sport, as well as the second driver from the Red Bull Junior programme to win in F1, after Sebastian Vettel.

“Congratulations to Daniel for his first win, which is very, very special.”
