The sound of the new 1.6 litre V6 Turbo power-units has split opinion, with some fans and race promoters complaining about the decrease in volume.

The FIA confirmed last month that it was working with teams to investigate possible solutions to amplify the noise of the engines.

Mercedes announced on Thursday that it would be trialling the new exhaust at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya’s two-day in-season test. It debuted on the W05, driven by Nico Rosberg, this morning.

Following some early aero runs, Rosberg then tested the exhaust at full throttle. Mercedes has now confirmed to media at the track that the team will not be running the exhaust again today.

Lewis Hamilton drove the car on Tuesday and completed 79 laps, finishing third on the timesheets. He was pleased with the amount of running that he managed, saying it was a “productive” day.
