The Woking-based outfit suffered a disastrous 2013 campaign with the difficult MP4-28, failing to register a top three result for the first time since 1980.
The Brit’s 15th season in F1 will start this weekend and he can’t wait to get back to racing. He doubts he can score his fourth victory at the Albert Park Circuit but believes the team’s new MP4-29 has the potential to be a race winning car.
“I would be very disappointed if we find out we are in the same situation as last year,” he told media in Melbourne on Thursday.
“There is a much better feeling in the team and the car itself feels like a pretty good race car, so things look promising.
“Whether we are quick enough to win here, I don’t know. There were two teams that were really fast in testing – and we weren’t one of them. But we have brought upgrades to Australia that hopefully will take us close to the front. We are definitely expecting to win races this year.”
Button confirmed that the team will bring new parts to the car this weekend, before adding: “Melbourne is a very different circuit to Bahrain so it is hard to say where we are now. My guess is that the Mercedes and the Williams will be quick here, so let’s find out how big the gaps will be to us.”
