Nico Rosberg has explained how he is expecting a tough battle for 2nd in the Constructors’ Championship between Mercedes, Ferrari and Lotus, with Red Bull already crowned Champions last weekend in India. The German driver has enjoyed a tremendously competitive season, with victories at Monte-Carlo and Silverstone.
Despite winning more races than team-mate Lewis Hamilton, the 28-year-old currently sits only 6th in the Drivers’ Championship with 144 points. In recent races Rosberg has been struck with incredibly tough luck, including front-wing failures and poor pit-stops. However, the German’s luck took a change for the good last time out at the Indian Grand Prix where he managed to both qualify and finish the race 2nd behind fellow countryman Sebastian Vettel.
Although he has agreed that it is rather demoralizing as a driver seeing Red Bull romp to what seems like unrivaled success, Nico Rosberg believes Mercedes currently have the strongest driver line-up on the grid. Coupled with the German marque’s highly competitive W104 machine, Nico Rosberg is fully confident that both he and team-mate Lewis Hamilton can fend off the advances of Lotus and Ferrari to finish 2nd in the Constructors’ Championship. Although the German marque would ideally prefer to be challenging Red Bull for Championship supremacy at the front, Nico Rosberg believes his team should feel content with their current position in the Championship.
“I think we can be pleased with where we are, considering where we were last year and the difficulties we had, we’ve made a huge step forward.” Explained Nico Rosberg, in an exclusive interview with Formula1.com. “Right now we are 2nd in the Constructors’ standings – the second best team out there after Red Bull – and I think we can be pleased with that! Of course our aspiration is to win – to be dominant in the sport. But we have to be realistic right now – the rest will come!”
With only three races remaining this season, the gap between Mercedes and Ferrari is only a meager four points, with Lotus a further 28 points behind the German marque. Although Nico Rosberg believes there is still room for improvement at Mercedes, he is remaining highly optimistic that the combination of their W104 car and strong driver line-up will be enough to retain 2nd in the Championship as the season draws to an intriguing conclusion.
“There is still room for improvement for us.” Continued Nico Rosberg, “It is going to be very tough. Ferrari, and now Lotus who are coming up strong from behind, will give us a tough challenge, but I am optimistic as we have a good car at the moment. I think our driver line-up helps the situation. We work very well together, we are a strong pairing – in fact I think we are the strongest pairing right now.”
Although Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull have managed to clinch both the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship with three races still remaining, the battle behind the dominant Austrian-outfit will unquestionably continue to enthrall. Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg have undoubtedly surprised many throughout the season with their sheer competitiveness, something which will make the duo hard to leapfrog during the final three races of the season.
