Without a confirmed drive heading into next season, Felipe Massa is banking on experience to give him an edge in the 2014 driver market. But while a steady hand might be a desired choice during a massive regulation change, Massa concedes the Formula One spectacle might suffer as a result.
“I think that experience is a lot more important than anything” said Massa during Thursdays open press conference. “People always remember the last race more than before, but I think peope know what I can bring to the team starting from zero with new rules.”
Crystal-balling next season, Felipe believed the challenges the drivers faced wouldn’t necessarily translate into entertaining television, but conceded it would be imprudent to complain early when all the facts were on the table.
“I think the cars will have a lot less downforce than what we have now” Felipe said. “Less downforce with tyres that might be harder… That’s what I heard, so the grip level could be very, very low. Everything will be very different. They way you drive, the way you race, the way you manage your fuel. I hope it will be interesting for people to watch. People who follow Formula One have a better idea but people who just watch sometimes on television don’t.”
With just five rounds left as a Ferrari driver, the final curtain call in Sao Paulo wouldn’t necessarily be topic anyone expected Massa to engage in, but admitted the event would enivitably be a moving experience – especially given his time spent as a youth at Interlagos watching his father compete in touring cars.
“The Brazilian Grand Prix is always very emotional. Especially when they (the fans) see you there in your last race for Ferrari after a long story” added Felipe. “I hope I can have a great race there and a great result . The result makes things even more emotional you know.”
Asked wither he would temper his approach for the remaining races, Massa reiterated he would be throwing caution to the wind.
“I’ll keep my aggresive approach. I have nothing to lose. The drive in the last race was good. The pace was good, but unfortunately someone touched me during the race, but I’ll keep trying everything I can.”
