The Toro Rosso team principal revealed that the Portuguese youngster was the prime candidate in an interview with Brazilian website totalrace.com.br, affirming the beliefs of many pundits and experts that da Costa would be the latest graduate of Red Bull’s junior programme.
“Antonio Felix da Costa is one of the candidates, but let’s wait for the decision of Red Bull and, if they take Daniel, we assess who will be the choice for our second seat,” Tost revealed.
da Costa’s junior career has been impressive, finishing third in GP3 last year and winning the Macau Grand Prix. This season, da Costa has raced in Formula Renault 3.5 alongside McLaren youngsters Kevin Magnussen and Stoffel Vandoorne as well as completing running for both Red Bull and Toro Rosso in the young driver test at Silverstone last month.
However, Red Bull are known to be deliberating between Ricciardo and Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen for the seat. If the world champions were to elect the latter as Mark Webber’s replacement, it would leave da Costa facing a third season waiting in the wings for a seat in Formula One.
