Sauber has confirmed their driver line-up for next week’s Silverstone young driver test, which will feature a combination of experienced race drivers and rising stars behind the wheel of the Swiss outfit’s Ferrari-powered C32 machine. Nico Hulkenberg will be joined by reserve driver Robin Frijns, along with Japanese rising star Kimiya Sato.
The Hinwil-based outfit’s reserve driver Robin Frijns will get proceedings underway on the opening day of the three-day event, with the Dutchman also scheduled to complete the morning period of the second day before ceding driving duties to main race driver Nico Hulkenberg who will get behind the wheel of the C32 during the afternoon period. This will undoubtedly prove the most valuable part of the test, as the German will eventually race the new tyres in Hungary later in the month.
For the third and final day of the young driver test, rising Japanese star Kimiya Sato will make his debut in the world of Formula 1. The 23-year-old Hyogo-born driver is currently leading the Auto GP Championship with Euronova Racing, after three victories in the category so far at Monza, Budapest and Silverstone. Despite Nico Hulkenberg’s presence at the test, Sauber has elected to leave out Esteban Gutierrez from their driving line-up. He will therefore receive his first laps on Pirelli’s new tyres during practice one at the Hungarian Grand Prix later in the month.
