The Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 Team driver has struggled for one lap speed in recent races along with facing higher tyre degradation and wear in comparison to his team-mate. The Brit has also found a lack of confidence under braking and has admitted that the car isn’t yet to his liking.
When asked by Auto Motor und Sport if Button was surprised by his former team-mates lack of pace, Button said that Hamilton will return to the front and when it does he will show his full potential.
“You have to be fair, he has at least collected significantly more points than Nico,” Button said. “Lewis is incredibly fast, but for him it’s the same as all of us; if he does not have the right balance in the car that suits him, and that he was used to for many years, then it is not easy. And of course Nico is also fast, but Lewis has not lost his speed. It is still there, he will come back and then he will shock you all.”
Mercedes are currently caught up in the latest Formula One scandal, tyregate. Pirelli held a private test at the Circuit de Catalunya prior to the Spanish Grand Prix where the Brackley based squad used their 2013 car and drivers to test the manufacturers products. The case will go to the International Tribunal on the 20th June.
When asked if Button felt Mercedes had gained anything from the test, he said: “Both drivers say no. You have to believe them otherwise they would be a liar if they did. So I believe them.”
