The German managed to make the most of the damp and slippery conditions to reign supreme and shared his happiness at breaking Mercedes hold on Saturday: “I’m happy the lap was good enough, as it was tight with Lewis. I am extremely happy with the result and looking forward to the race tomorrow.”

Last years champion is feeling confident in the dry too, adding “I think we had strong pace yesterday, so no matter what the conditions we should be in decent shape.” He described the qualifying hour as “tricky” before congratulating Williams driver Valtteri Bottas for his first top three qualifying position: “Congratulations to Valtteri, I think he did an excellent job putting the Williams on P3.”

Team-mate Mark Webber couldn’t quite match Vettel’s lap time and will line-up fifth for tomorrow’s race. Reflecting on the session he said: “That was quite tricky for everyone. It’s a bit of a mixed grid and I would have liked to have been a bit more comfortable than fifth, but in the end it’s what we got.”

Like his fellow Red Bull driver, Webber praised Bottas for his impressive lap time. “It was a good job by Bottas and it should be an interesting grand prix.” Continuing to look forward to tomorrow’s race, Webber added “There’s a long way to go tomorrow, so let’s see how it unfolds. Dry conditions tomorrow are nicer for everyone as it makes it a but more predictable and straightforward and visibility here isn’t great if it rains.”

Team Principal Christian Horner shared his delight at scoring another pole position: “It’s fantastic to get the pole in Montreal. It was a really difficult qualifying session and it’s very east for things to go wrong in a session like that.”
